Today's technology has changed the way we date. Whether people like to admit it or not, conventional dating methods have taken a backseat to text messaging, social media sites such as Facebook and e-mail. That said, there are still some things that should be done in person depending on the situation.
I don't think there's anything necessarily wrong with letting someone down via text, Facebook message or e-mail provided your relationship with the person isn't that serious. If you've only gone on a couple dates and you're not feeling the vibe, sending a message to let the other person know you're no longer interested isn't out of line.
However, if you have been legitimately dating someone for a decent amount of time, such as a few months or more, you should probably take the high road and break the news face to face, or at least over the phone. People will remember that you made the effort to be respectful and honest, and you would appreciate the same if the tables were turned.
