Top 5: Why the Osbournes are Still Married
Previous
Next
One of the couples that refresh my hopes of love and matrimony is Ozzie and Sharon Osbourne. However, this couple comes with an added bonus: not only do they show me that lasting love is possible, but they give insight into HOW it is possible. Ozzie and Sharon are as similar as they are different, and that balance is the key. Below are the reasons I think they've been married for almost 28 years (and together for even longer).
  • 1
  • They are Co-Celebrities
First of all--but perhaps least important--is that they are both celebrities. Sharon has had many adventures in the entertainment industry, her latest being a spot on The Celebrity Apprentice . Ozzy is still a legend rocker who is still rocking; his next album--understandably titled " "Scream" " --is due in June of this year. We all know that celebrity and matrimony often do not mix, but these are two people who realize that their success wouldn't be possible without the other. Sharon rode into fame on Ozzy's shoulders and Ozzy remains famous by Sharon's efforts to hold him up by the shoulders (sometimes literally, I suppose).

  • They Have a Co-Sordid Past
Now we can get to some of the deeper issues. Sharon and Ozzy have a long and dark history of drug and alcohol abuse. This has caused each to see the other at his or her worst moments. Knowing someone's vulnerabilities can either induce disgust or empathy, if not both. The disgust one may feel for the other seems to have been trumped by the empathy and compassion that may have ensued. Besides, if you show somebody the worst parts of you and they stick around, the appreciation alone may be your major motivation for keeping the marriage intact.

  • They Have Nothing to Hide from Each Other
This leads to the next point: Both Ozzy and Sharon can truly be themselves around each other. No posturing, no trying to come off as something perceived as "better" or "more sophisticated" or anything like that. They are both crazy, and they feel safe in their craziness with each other. Yes, misery loves company, but so does insanity.

  • They Are Good Teammates
Of course, this comfort in insanity must be tempered to maintain careers and a family. This is why being a team is a great way to maintain a marriage. One's life would fall apart without the assistance of the other. Now, I'm not quite sure what Ozzy may contribute to this teamwork, but it has to be something. Even a particular "Osbourne" brand of moral support would suffice. The point is that if you see life as a challenge, and your partner as your teammate to get through that challenge, you will develop a deeper bond.

  • They're Too Legendary to Break Up
Lastly, they may be together because of us. Yes, you and I. We wouldn't have it any other way, and they know that. The couple is an icon of life's inherent wackiness. They are a bastion of hope in a sea of life overrun with a fear of both boredom and life without love. If Ozzy and Sharon can do it, and if they can do it while being insane and in the spotlight, then WE can do it, too.

Well, that is my mini-lesson on how a short study of the Osbournes can guide you through married life. Don't go driving drunk, urinating on the Alamo or biting heads off bats: Ozzy and Sharon are not all-purpose examples of good living. However, what they tell us about life and love is pretty cool.

Some couples are just made for each other. I think that is definitely the case with Sharon and Ozzy. She pulls him in when he needs it. He supports her when she is at her darkest hour. When she had cancer, Ozzy was there for her unconditionally. When couples stick together through ups and downs, that’s true love. You cannot break true love.
